The Laguna Sound Healer
I've spent more than 20 years studying sound and much of my working life creating with it as a composer, producer and audio engineer. I also facilitated sound healing for many years at my father's treatment center. Those experiences brought me to a simple kind of work: creating time for people to slow down and listen.
I grew up in San Diego, and my curiosity about sound has taken me through six months in China and time in Casablanca. I'm interested in the details: the way a tone unfolds, the texture of an instrument and the space before the next note. In a private session, I bring that attention to the experience we create together.
Mark is also the founder of NARRA, a cinematic audiobook production company, and has a composer partnership with Matter Music in North Hollywood.
Explore sound
Sound begins as vibration. Your ears translate it into signals your brain recognizes. A live bowl adds texture, shifting overtones and a sound that gradually fades. During a session, that changing sound becomes something you can listen to without needing to solve anything.
Frequency, measured in hertz, helps determine how high or low a tone sounds.
Real instruments contain combinations of frequencies that give them character. A bowl is richer than a single pure tone.
Volume, pacing and silence shape the listening experience alongside the notes themselves.
Doubling the frequency raises the pitch by one octave. Each wave is drawn over the same 20 millisecond window.
440 Hz completes 8.8 cycles in 20 ms.
Illustrative pure tones, not recordings or measurements of Mark's bowls. Small speakers may not reproduce the lowest tone fully.
110 Hz (A2), 220 Hz (A3), 440 Hz (A4) and 880 Hz (A5) are each one octave apart. Each step doubles the number of wave cycles in the same span of time, and the pitch sounds higher.
It is a tuning choice for the note A4, not a measure of how healing a note is. 440 Hz is the standard musical reference (ISO 16); 432 Hz is an alternative reference.
Illustrative pure tones. This is not a description of how Mark's instruments are tuned.
Ritual and attention
In Tibetan Buddhist traditions, the dril-bu bell accompanies ritual recitation, as documented in The Met's collection. It belongs to a specific living culture, not a generic ancient wellness story.
1711 · Repeatable pitch
The invention of the tuning fork is generally credited to musician John Shore in 1711. A simple vibrating object helped musicians carry a consistent pitch; precision forks later became scientific tools.
Listening today
Contemporary crystal sound baths bring modern instruments into guided listening and meditation. Mark's approach combines his own sound studies, studio experience and hands-on work with people.
Research note
Research into singing-bowl meditation is encouraging and still developing. In one small observational study, 62 participants reported lower tension and improvements in mood after a session. That does not establish a medical treatment or prove that a particular frequency heals a specific condition. Mark's sessions are offered for relaxation and personal reflection.
